“The massive Arcelor Mittal steelworks next to our shelters used to be overrun by thousands of stray dogs. Some workers at the plant were feeding them poison to get rid of the problem.
In 2007, after the media exposed the story, the steel plant’s management agreed to work with ROLDA and fund the building of a modern shelter and a proper infrastructure: water, drainage and electricity. And pay for the care of the rescued steelworks dogs. The collaboration worked.
But then things started to go wrong. The company failed to build the onsite veterinary centre, resulting in hundreds of agonising journeys for very sick animals. All building investment and maintenance payments were stopped. They even cut payments for the dogs’ upkeep.
To put things right, ROLDA is now having to fight on behalf of the dogs in the courts. All we want is justice – and the money we were promised. This legal battle needn’t be happening. The corporation’s Chairman and CEO, Lakshmi Mittal, lives in London, UK. He has the power to intervene and stop this needless waste of time, energy and resources.
To a company with global profits in 2016 of US$1.8 billion, the sums owed to ROLDA are nothing.
Nor to someone of Mr Mittal’s personal wealth of nearly US$20 billion.
